What Is a Pesticide Label?

A pesticide label is more than just a sticker for a product; it is a legal document. A pesticide applicator assumes specific obligations when they purchase and use a product.

Not all pesticide labels are the same. The format of a label will differ between manufacturers, including commercial and consumer product labels. Pesticide products are distinguished based on their type and their registration. There are different types of pesticides including insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, termiticides, and rodenticides. All of these types of pesticide products must be registered with the states and the EPA. 

Are There Different Registration Types?

Yes, there are four main pesticide registrations:

• Section 3 — the product has standard registration
  
• Section 25(b) — there is a minimal risk, product is exempt from Federal registration but not from the States
  
• Section 24(c) — the pesticide has been registered based on a specific local need
  
• Section 18 — the product has been given an emergency exemption.
  

What Type of Information Needs to Be On The Label?

• the brand name or trade name of the product
  
• the ingredient statement
  
• the percentage or amount of active ingredient(s) by weight
  
• the net contents of the container
  
• the name and address of the manufacturer
